Healthcare in Armenia will be one step forward: "Genotek" laboratory was launched

The works of the genetic laboratory "Genotek" have started in Yerevan: all he activities here will be carried out jointly with the Center for Medical Genetics and Primary Health Care.

Armen Muradyan, Rector of Yerevan State Medical University named after Mkhitar Heratsi, Arman Khojoyan, Deputy Minister of Economy, and Tamara Sargsyan, Director of the Center for Medical Genetics and Primary Health Care, Head of YSMU Medical Genetics Department, ARICE expert were present at the solemn event.

The modern laboratory, equipped with platforms for genomic sequencing and microchip analysis, was prepared by the American company “Illumina” and allows solving problems in the field of medical research, as well as agriculture.

In addition to the diagnosis of hereditary diseases, one of the directions of the "Genotek" laboratory will be the genomic breeding of plants and animals.

The director of the "Genotek" company, Valery Ilyinsky, emphasized that the abovementioned researches would be conducted in Armenia for the first time. "Our function is the laboratory part. We share technologies and capabilities to decode and interpret various genetic traits. And the professional doctors of the Center for Medical Genetics and Primary Health Care, the pioneer of medical genetics in Armenia, will provide counseling and conduct genetic tests," he added.

State-of-the-art genetic research will be carried out in the laboratory. "That's why we brought the best American equipment to Armenia. The device, worth about 1 million dollars, completely decodes the human genome," emphasized Valery Ilyinsky.

Tamara Sargsyan, Director of the Center for Medical Genetics and Primary Health Care, Head of the Department of Medical Genetics of YSMU, ARICE expert, noted that she highly values the cooperation with "Genotek" company, which will allow us to take domestic science and health care one step forward to a bright future.
